Where do you get all these horrible DVDs?
I thought I’d share from whom I acquire most of my bad movies from since I’ve had a couple people ask me this question before. In terms of where exactly I buy these, it ranges from big department stores to local used video stores. In this entry I’ll list which companies distribute these titles since it’s easier to find them online. Yeah, this is kind of a plug for these companies, but, hey, I owe them for giving me such entertainment.
DIGIVIEW ENTERTAINMENT
This is the company that produces the majority of those thin dollar DVDs you’ll see at Wal-Mart and some outlet stores. They are a good deal considering they try to fit two movies on each disc, but I believe they have since gone out of business considering their website isn’t finished and I’ve noticed they’ve been pulling them from some Wal-Mart stores.
ALPHA VIDEO
These guys are awesome. They have a great website at Oldies.com and their cover art is gorgeous (especially the 3-D pop-up cover for the Sons of Kong set). They are a tad bit spendier than the Digiview DVDs, but it’s worth it for the classic covers. My favorites DVDs are from their Atomic Age Classics series which features classic educational films about communism and venereal diseases. The video quality is so-so, but the menus are are nice. Not to mention most of the DVDs come with a neat catalog that also advertises T-shirts and posters of DVD cover art. A great distributor for classic movies and lots of serials.
MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT
This company specializes in those large movie packs of 10, 20, 50, and 100 movies. These are pretty good collections as they managed to fit four movies on each double-sided disc and the cost is quite cheap. The only downside is that they paste their watermark logo on the screen ever so often during a movie.
ST CLAIR ENTERTAINMENT
This is an interesting distributor because they mostly specialize in music CDs and concert DVDs, but they have some pretty nice ‘mega-sets’ of movies. My favorite is the ‘Tales from the Future’ set which has both the silent classics Metropolis and The Lost World. Their sets are a lot smaller than Mill Creek, but the packaging is better quality.
FULL MOON
Once known as Empire Entertainment, Full Moon has been releasing their own original brand B-movie horror films for over a decade. Some of their big titles include such cult hits as Demonic Toys and the Puppet Master series. Whenever I want bad horror, I turn to this company.
And that’s basically who I buy most of my DVDs from. Oh sure, there are plenty of other distributors, but most of them are from well-known studios that release a dud every once in awhile. To see these companies, I salute you. Thank you for giving me hours of cheap entertainment and plenty of criticism ammo.
